JOB SUMMARY

Perform routine animal control and law enforcement activities to safeguard citizens from dangerous and nuisance animals and enforce state and county laws for the Animal Control Department within scope of authority and training under basic supervision. This is a working level class in animal control, responsible for enforcing applicable regulations in a civilian capacity.

TYPICAL CLASSIFICATION ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Respond to calls for service from the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) and capture, contain, and impound animals at-large, including sick, injured, and vicious animals.
  • Patrol assigned area and enforce County and state animal control regulations, including Pinal County Animal Control Ordinance 050510-ACC and Arizona Revised Statue Title 11, 13 and 36.
  • Assist in investigating animal cruelty, neglect, excessive noise, bite allegations, and nuisance complaints, notify owners and involved parties of violations and corrective actions, write reports, and issue citations and warnings.
  • Contact individuals to discuss violations and alternatives for resolving compliance issues, conduct follow-up inspections, and verify compliance.
  • Assist in investigating requests for service for domestic and wildlife animal control issues, pick up and dispose of dead animals, seize animals as allowed by state and county laws and ordinances, and relocate wild animals as needed.
  • Learn to euthanize sick, injured, unclaimed, and owner-surrendered animals, both in the field and at the animal shelter.
  • Transport animals to shelter, assist with animal care, and assist with maintenance and repair at animal shelter.
  • Maintain activity logs and records and prepare technical documents for hearings and prosecutions.
  • Provide animal-related information to public, respond to questions regarding animal care, rabies, and other zoonotic disease control issues, and assist in setting up and conducting rabies vaccination and animal license clinics.
  • Work with other state and regional law enforcement agencies on incidents concerning wildlife and livestock.
  • Contribute to the efficiency and effectiveness of the unit's service to its customers by offering suggestions and directing or participating as an active member of a work team.
  • Maintain absolute confidentiality of work-related issues, customer records, and restricted County information.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

Minimum Requirements

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS TO PERFORM WORK:

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • One (1) years of experience working with/handling animals.
  • Valid Driver’s License and Arizona State Driver’s License within 30 days of hire.
  • Or an equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience may substitute for the minimum requirements.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Specific technical training and certifications may be required including National Animal Control Association (NACA) training.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of basic laws, statutes, and ordinances governing animal control issues.
  • Knowledge of basic animal capture and control techniques and symptoms of common animal diseases.
  • Knowledge of geography, roads, and landmarks of County and surrounding areas.
  • Knowledge of regional animal care resources available to citizens.
  • Skill in exercising patience, care and compassion in dealing with animals.
  • Skill in learning to capture, control, contain, and transport sick, injured, and rabid animals.
  • Skill in care, maintenance, and safe operation of specialized animal control tools and equipment.
  • Ability to deal tactfully and courteously with the public, and handle stressful situations and angry people.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
The work is very heavy and requires exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. The work also requires the ability to balance, climb, crawl, crouch, feel, finger, grasp, handle, reach, kneel, lift, push, pull, stand, stoop, walk, perform repetitive motion, operate motor vehicles and/or heavy equipment, hear, speak, and demonstrate mental and visual acuity.
