Associate Vice President for Research and Graduate Education
West Virginia University (WVU) Health Sciences Center, located in Morgantown, WV, seeks an innovative, dynamic, and collaborative leader to serve as the Associate Vice President of Research and Graduate Education (https://www.hsc.wvu.edu/).
About the Opportunity
The WVU Health Sciences Center (HSC) includes the Schools of Medicine, Nursing, Public Heath, Pharmacy and Dentistry. Across the five schools over sixty active foundational research labs exist in which trainees across the continuum participate in extramurally funded research. In addition, nationally recognized efforts in clinical, translational and population-based research thrive with robust collaboration across well-established Centers and Institutes focused on Cancer, Neuroscience, Heart and Vascular Disease and Vision Sciences among others. The WVU HSC currently has three active Center of Biomedical Research Excellence (CoBRE) grants focused on Tumor Microenvironment, Stroke and Visual Sciences, and an active CTR-IDeA grant in support of a Clinical and Translational Science Institute. T32 training grants in the areas of Behavioral and Biomedical Sciences, Stroke and Alzheimer’s Disease Related Dementias, Cell and Molecular Biology and Biomedical Engineering, and Systems Toxicology augment the energetic training environment. Collectively, the research funding at the WVU HSC is ~$100M annually. Fourteen PhD programs are overseen in the Office of Research and Graduate Education led by the Associate VP for Research and Graduate Education and a team of ~ 25 dedicated faculty and staff. The priorities of the office are supported by an Assistant VP for Research, Assistant VP for Graduate Education, the Director of Core Resources, an Assistant Vice President for Faculty Mentoring and additional high-level science and education focused staff dedicated to innovative programming. A robust pre- and post-award group is also part of the team that collaborates routinely with the WVU Office of Sponsored Programs.

What you'll do:
Duties of the AVP of Research and Graduate Education include providing strategic direction to all aspects of the WVU HSC related to research and graduate education.

Candidates must hold a Ph.D. or M.D. degree in a STEM discipline and have ten or more years of experience in higher education with five or more years of experience in administrative leadership relevant to both research and graduate education including financial oversight of significant programs. Demonstration of successful fiscal and personnel management is expected, as well as creative, innovative program development. A commitment to mentoring and career development of faculty and staff as well as dedication to a culture of creativity, community building and partnership is essential. Additional qualifications include a nationally recognized research program, proven record of teaching and mentoring of students at the undergraduate, graduate and professional levels, commitment to innovative educational programs, expertise with trainee and faculty recruiting and retention, and demonstration of transparent leadership, cross-disciplinary team-building, and contribution to institutional growth. The successful applicant will possess academic credentials that merit appointment as a tenured Professor and will report directly to the Chancellor and Executive Dean of the Health Sciences Center.
