Overview

Developmental Disabilities Institute, DDI, is one of the largest providers of care to children and adults with Autism, developmental disabilities and other special needs. DDI has been a part of Long Island for over 50 years serving over 1,500 children and adults with Autism, other developmental disabilities and special needs. DDI provides innovative and expansive services to our population through various educational settings, residential services, day habilitation programs and vocational services.

Working in DDI's Childhood Day Services division the Behavior Support Worker II works along side the Special Education Teachers and Children's Day Aides as part of the interdisciplinary team. Working in the classroom the Behavior Support Worker II works with children with developmental disabilities on a variety of age appropriate educational goals.

Responsibilities

• Instructs and directs classroom staff on receiving and recording student goals information. Analyzes student information to ensure conformity with Behavior Support Plan. Effectively recommends improvements in process and counseling / disciplinary action for improper data collection by classroom staff.
• Assesses and trains classroom staff on the implementation of the Behavior Support Plan. Develops and monitors behavior programs in collaboration with behavior specialists.
• Provides behavior support and crisis intervention for students on respective caseload (approximately 18 students) or on an as needed basis.
• Assigns behavior-related tasks and activities for students to classroom staff on an as needed basis.
• Knowledgeable of a secondary caseload to facilitate collaboration and provide coverage for other Behavior Support Staff.
• Assesses the behaviors of students identified as having behavioral difficulties and counsels/trains classroom staff on effective behavioral management.
• Provides quality assurance for the integrity of the Behavior Support Plan. Observes classroom staff on implementation of Plan and effectively recommends methods of improvement, counseling or disciplinary action for failure to follow Plan.
• Manages classroom staff’s utilization of tools and equipment (e.g., token economies, reinforcers, contracts, protective equipment) which are needed for behavior support purposes.
• Leads/participates in team meetings, specialized in-house training meetings, etc for assigned students/classes, or outside forums as related to PBIS, such as Regional Special Education Technical Assistance Support Center topics related to Behavior Management.
• Collaborates with behavior specialists and other team members regarding behavior issues in school, home and in the community.
• Prepares documentation/assessments for CSE meetings, as needed or requested by the Clinical Coordinators, Behavior Specialists or Licensed Psychologist (e.g., behavior data, observations of student, preparation of paperwork for BRC, BSP summaries).
• Teaches in-services or classroom meetings on relevant topics on an as-needed basis. (e.g., ABC Data, Reinforcement, taking data).
• Actively participates in bus duty.
• Assists with overall program functions as needed (e.g., safety, student intake screenings, bus duty oversight, lunch coverage, provide toileting assistance, etc).

Essential Fuctions

• Must be able to modify the area to secure the safety of the children i.e. move/push tables and other heavy objects up to 20 lbs
• Must be able to lift/move 20 lbs (mats)
• Must be able to run after student up to 500 feet
• Must be able to run to a classroom in need up to 500 feet
• Must be able to kneel, twist and bend
• Must be able to respond to fire alarms

Qualifications

• Must possess a BA Degree in Psychology, or related area
• Must possess a minimum of 1 year experience with individuals with Autism or developmental disability.
• Must possess in-depth knowledge, experience and skill with Applied Behavior Analysis, and Positive Behavioral Intervention and Support.
• SCIP Certification is required. (Will be permitted to obtain within 2 months of hire).
