Bridge Inspection Assistant/Team Leader

In this position, you will serve an important role in the planning and execution of bridge inspections and the development of bridge load ratings. The role would involve serving as an inspection Team Member, planning, and coordinating inspections, and development of inspection reports. The work would involve a mix of office and field work. The ideal candidate should possess a “can-do” attitude, excellent verbal and written communication skills, and an ability to work independently as well as with a team in a dynamic, fast-paced, and fun environment. The position includes significant opportunities for personal and professional development and growth within VHB’s emerging bridge inspection practice.


Responsibilities
  • Planning and performing structural inspections of highway and railroad bridges, culverts, ancillary structures, and buildings in accordance with NBI and AREMA Standards
  • Completing of bridge inspection reports for MBTA, MassDOT and other state and local agencies
  • Performing load ratings for structures
  • Preparing design drawings, specifications, and procedures for bridge repairs
  • Completing additional bridge design work as shifting workload requires
  • Mentoring younger staff
Skills & Abilities
  • Ability to work at heights, in confined spaces and adjacent to live highway and railroad traffic
  • Familiarity with MassDOT, AASHTO, and AREMA design codes
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Proactive and self-motivated, with excellent attention to detail and quality
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Enthusiasm to learn, seek out opportunities, and take responsibility
  • Ability and willingness to travel (throughout New England), including overnight, as required
  • Experience with vertical lift equipment, under bridge inspection trucks and rope access credentials are a plus
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering
  • 1-2+ years of professional bridge inspection and load rating experience
  • NHI/FHWA Safety Inspection of In-Service Bridges course preferred
  • NHI/FHWA Fracture Critical course preferred
