Job Description – Church Sexton

Approximately 20 hours/week - Flexible schedule

General Description

• The Church Sexton keeps the buildings and facilities in clean, orderly, and safe condition.
• General cleaning of rest rooms, kitchens, floors, doors and windows, furnishings, and removal of rubbish. Moves and sets up tables and chairs for meetings and other functions.
• Mows the lawn and keeps it neat and clean. Snow and ice removal to maintain safe conditions. Replaces light bulbs, keeps the facility secure, and notifies the staff of any repairs that are found to be needed. Reports to the Church Council, although day to day direction is provided by the Church Office Manager and Property & Maintenance committee.

Job Duties

• Follow the daily worklists which organizes the duties listed here into a daily schedule.
• Clean restrooms; remove trash, stock paper supplies. Notify Church Office Manager when more supplies are needed.
• Clean kitchens and water coolers.
• Clean bare floors by dry and damp mopping, with occasional stripping, resealing, and buffing. Hardwood floors to be dry mopped or spray buffed only.
• Clean carpets by vacuuming and occasional shampooing.
• Remove and set trash and recyclables to the curb on the appointed day.
• Clean mirrors, doors, and windows except the stained glass windows.
• Set up or store tables, chairs, folding walls, and other furniture as needed for scheduled events.
• Monitor grounds and pick up rubbish.
• Mow lawn, rake up leaves and debris as needed and place at the curb.
• Replace light bulbs as needed.
• Clean and dust furniture and other furnishings except musical instruments.
• Monitor security and lock doors and turn out lights at the appropriate times.
• Help to coordinate all repair and maintenance appointments.
• Other jobs as directed by Church Office Manager or Property & Maintenance Committee.

Required Skills and Abilities

• Knowledge of general cleaning methods, chemicals, and equipment including their safe use.
• Ability to lift tables, chairs, rubbish containers, and boxes and bags of miscellaneous materials.
• Climbing of standard stepladders. Higher climbing not to be done without assistance.
• Able to safely operate power equipment including lawn mower, snowblower, weed trimmer, and leaf blower.
• Must follow scheduled tasks, written procedures, operating manuals, and oral assignments without close supervision.
• Flexibility to budget time and adapt to changes in requests and to provide assistance as needed to members who visit for various reasons.
• Must be able to recognize cleaning and maintenance needs which are not specifically listed in the job duties.
• Report items needing maintenance. Ability to make minor repairs without assistance.

Job Type: Part-time

Pay: $15.00 per hour
