JOB DUTIES

The primary duties of the Engineer in Training (EIT) Civil Engineer or Civil Designer will be to assist Professional Engineers (PE) and Project Managers with the completion of a wide range of Civil Engineering work, including fieldwork (visits to work sites, assisting with permit applications, CAD work, and assisting with report preparation just to name a few). Duties may also include (but are not limited to) miscellaneous field activities such as gathering data, using Excel spreadsheets for various calculations, creating or editing Word documents for marketing or reports, and many other miscellaneous tasks as needed. A BS degree in Civil Engineering is required, but no experience is required (we will train you). An expectation of this role is the EIT will apply for and successfully pass the Principles and Practice of Engineering (PE) exam within 4 years. Strong technical skills are critical to the success of these projects, which involves data acquisition, processing, evaluation, and reporting including the use of AutoCAD Civil 3D. Willingness to learn and be flexible with a wide variety of tasks are also very important. Typical job activities include the following:

• Completion of Civil Engineering investigations, including completing or assisting with site evaluations, review of drawings and plans, stormwater analysis, historical data review, site grading plans, and site utility plans report preparation.
• Fieldwork as needed, including permitting.
• Work with sub-consultants as needed.
• Using the web, acquire project site and topographic maps and create report exhibits.
• Provide intermediate computer drafting support using AutoCAD. Create content, and ensure quality (spelling and attention to detail are extremely important).
• Compile project information and prepare draft reports for review by your Project Manager.
• Coordination with clients or their representatives and project owners/agencies.
• Assist with proposal preparation and marketing activities.
• Performing technical and feasibility studies, including analyzing maps, survey reports, plans, and related data to create civil engineering designs.
• Determine construction costs, local, and professional building regulations, environmental impacts, and other factors that can affect project implementation.
• Collaborating with professionals, such as Architects, Engineers, and clients.
• Perform other duties as required - opportunities abound for a wide variety of assignments.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES

Engineers must possess a 4-year engineering degree, and EI/EIT certification is desirable (required for Staff Level Engineer).
Designers need 3+ years of applicable experience, a 2-year degree is desirable but not required.
Excellent communication skills are requisite, including the ability to write technical reports. No particular job experience is required (we will train you), a positive attitude, willingness to take direction and learn a variety of new tasks, promptness, efficiency, and organizational skills are essential (you will be working on multiple projects simultaneously), willingness to work on a wide variety of projects that may change daily. Engineers must be proficient with MS Office applications including spreadsheets and word processing; knowledge of CAD and/or GIS applications is beneficial.

PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS

This job requires both field and office time. A clean driving record (for insurance purposes and driving company vehicles) is advantageous. We have a team-oriented approach, so the ability to work with and for others is also imperative.

• Must be able to work indoors and outdoors in hot and/or cold weather conditions.
• Must be able to stand and/or walk for long periods of time.
• Must be able to perform general civil engineering tasks.
• Must be able to kneel, squat, and/or bend.
• Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds.

OFFICE/VIRTUAL WORKING CONDITIONS

This job requires a significant amount of time interacting with other EITs, Professional Engineers, and staff. With today's environment and tools, it is possible to be effective in working 100% remotely. However, since an EIT needs direction and guidance from a PE, we encourage you to choose one of our offices.
