Costume Designer and Shop Manager - Russell Sage College
Job description
This is a ten-months per year, full-time position.
- Design and build/execute costume designs for 4-6 productions per academic year (late August through mid-June).
- Complete all production responsibilities in a timely manner and at a professional level of quality.
- Support an environment of equity and inclusion that uses mentoring techniques designed to increase success for every student.
- Attend Theatre Institute at Sage meetings, as well as design or production meetings with creative and production staff.
- Attend run-throughs and dress rehearsals, scheduled by the director and stage manager of each production.
- Generate run-of-show wardrobe paperwork for each production, in conjunction with each production's stage manager.
- Serve as primary Wardrobe Supervisor for all productions, including show laundry, with help from the student wardrobe crew (assigned per production).
- Set and enforce safe work policies in the costume shop and in the backstage environment, including teaching crew essential skills required for dressing actors and wardrobe maintenance.
- Manage the budget and purchasing for each production, including dry cleaning, supplies, and equipment maintenance/purchase. Additionally, participate with and guide high school interns and college work study students in maintenance of extensive costume stock ? organizing, tagging, and replacing stock as needed.
- Teach a semester of Costume Technology for the department's high school Internship program. College students in the department can be added for a direct study credit as space and student interest warrants.
- Participate in other educational programs such as post performance residencies, on-site/in-school workshops, and meet and greets for perspective students and interns as time allows.
- Manage rentals as time and inventory allow.
- Teach and model professional theatre habits and work ethic.
The estimated wage range is $18.20 to $18.70 per hour for 37.5 hours per week for 44 weeks. Anticipated start is in August 2023.
Job Requirements:
- Minimum BFA/BA degree in Theatrical Design/Technology or at least two-years comparable work experience working in a college or professional theatre costume department.
- Ability to meet deadlines, sometimes with narrow time and budget constraints. Ability to work alone and be self-motivated.
- Solid knowledge of the full range of the costume construction process.
- A strong eye for design and style.
- Basic craft skills, makeup and wig skills, mask making, dyeing, millinery, and show maintenance knowledge.
- Extremely detail oriented and responsible.
- Strong team player with problem solving skills and willingness to explore new techniques and products.
