GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The Director of Catering is the strategic catering and backline sales growth leader of the organization. They are responsible for developing our catering, delivery and backline business and systems, as well as leading execution of the Catering Sales Manager team and coaching our in-shop Catering Leaders & Backline Coordinators. They will drive backline business analytics, along with systems and process, to help drive performance and achieve year-over-year growth of Potbellys catering and backline business. This position reports directly to the VP of Ops Integration and Shop Services.
FOCUS
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Build the Business & Analyze Performance (Sales & Profits)
- Partnering with the Support Center Marketing, Field Operations and Senior Management team to develop catering/backline strategies and tactics that build sales and grow the brands catering business
- Analyzing backline sales trends, issues, and consumer catering needs in order to improve catering lead generation, execution and shop revenue, while providing Senior Management with a solid understanding of the business opportunities and challenges
- Monitoring competitive activity to understand revenue generation channels and best practices to adopt
- Identifying growth opportunities by effectively understanding B2B and B2C channels, and how to approach each to grow the business
Create Systems & Processes (Sales & Customers)
- Monitoring performance measurements to ensure sales volume and profit objectives are accomplished and recommend and implement solutions to stay on track
- Recommending new systems, technology and/or process that allow for consistent execution as the brand grows
- Providing perspective and recommendations on how to leverage online catering ordering and management of pick-up and delivery business
- Defining incentive programs for Catering Sales Managers and in-shop Catering Leaders & Backline Coordinators that drive both accountability and performance, and for large clients to encourage repeat business
Build People Capability & Coach for Success (People)
- Managing the planning and overseeing the execution of programs and training that build in-shop execution and capability of Catering Leaders & Backline Coordinators
- Coaching and Developing Catering Sales Manager direct reports to create a high performing sales team that can demonstrate year over year growth
- Other duties as assigned
ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL FUNCTIONS
- Must have the ability/stamina to work a minimum of 50 to 55 hours a week.
- Must be able to spend 10% of time traveling
- Will frequently reach, feel, bend, stoop, carry, manipulate and key in data.
- Must be able to work in both warm and cool environments, indoors and outdoors.
- Must be able to tolerate higher levels of noise from music, customers and employee traffic.
- Must be able to tolerate potential allergens: peanut products, egg, dairy, gluten, soy, seafood and shellfish.
- Must be able to engage in problem-solving skills to help identify and solve potential issues in the field.
- Must be able to communicate heavily with Field Team and Support Center through telephone, e-mail and in-person communications.
EXPERIENCE, EDUCATION AND BEHAVIORS
- Must represent the Potbelly Advantage and Our Values
- Minimum of 5 years experience within the foodservice industry and have created sales revenues for locations through a wide variety of channels
- 2- 3 years experience working with third party partners
- Leadership and influencing skills that demonstrate the ability to lead teams, build positive relationships and collaborate with internal and external partners
- Working knowledge of shop operations and the impact the catering business plays within the location
- Swift, high-quality decision making, informed by insights, but not paralyzed when faced with a lack of it
- College degree required
- Project Management experience highly preferred
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office products
- Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously in a fast paced, rapidly growing environment
- Must be organized; proactive; and possess strong sense of urgency and professional demeanor
- Strong communication skills, both written and oral
- Solid coaching ability to support Catering Sales Managers and neighborhood shops
- Analytical ability to assess impact of sales and initiatives
