The Office of the Legislative Counsel is a nonpartisan office of the United States House of Representatives that assists the Members and committees of the House with the drafting of legislation and related activities. The Office does not advocate the adoption or rejection of any particular proposal or policy and provides assistance on a strictly impartial and confidential basis. Job Summary:

A Front Office Staff Assistant for the Office of the Legislative Counsel assists the attorneys and teams of the Office to meet the legislative drafting needs of the U.S. House of Representatives through a variety of activities.

Duties include the following:

  • Greeting clients and other visitors to the Office and answering the main Office telephone.

  • Carefully assessing and distributing client requests to attorneys in person and by phone and email.

  • Performing Office support tasks, including managing conference room reservations, sending office-wide email announcements, and ordering repairs and supplies.

  • Obtaining and filing legal materials and other documents, including large books.

  • Maintaining the staff schedule and leave records of the Office.

  • Additional tasks as assigned.


A successful candidate for the position of Front Office Staff Assistant should possess the following:

  • Some college experience or an equivalent combination of education and work experience (current students, including part-time students, also encouraged).

  • Experience working in a professional environment.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including the ability to communicate clearly, professionally, and tactfully.

  • Attention to detail.

  • Understanding of, and the ability to maintain, confidentiality.

  • Knowledge of, and experience with, various information and office systems, including word processing and email systems (candidates experienced with iManage and Microsoft Office 365 encouraged).

  • Ability to self-start, multi-task, and effectively prioritize under tight deadlines.

  • Ability to work both independently and cooperatively.

  • Willingness to learn, including a willingness to initiate learning and ask questions.

To be eligible for the position of Front Office Staff Assistant, an applicant must (1) be a U.S. citizen, (2) be willing to work full time on weekdays (and on occasional weekends given the varying demands of the congressional schedule), and (3) have an ability to be impartial, in appearance as well as in fact, on matters of politics and public policy.
