Full-time Municipal Court Deputy Bailiff
Job description
Hiring a Full-Time Deputy Bailiff to work under the direction and supervision of the Director of Court Services/Chief Bailiff, to be charged with maintaining security within the Court, for the Court's Staff, as well as the general public. The Bailiff will administer the Judge's Docket, control the lines of communications to the Court, and is required to exercise discretion in all matters concerning the Court.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
· Security: Responsible for the personal security of the Judge, Magistrates, Court staff, and Courtroom visitors. Secures Courtrooms at the Judge’s direction and at the close of the day. Operates metal detector at the Court Security Checkpoint
· Communications: Controls the lines of communications to and from the Judge. Greets visitors to the Court and assists visitors with questions concerning court procedure. Is required to professionally respond to difficult or hostile visitors to the Court, and reports any need for police or medical assistance to the Lyndhurst Police Dispatch.
· Confidentiality: Exercises discretion and sound judgment regarding the confidentiality of all information encountered on the job. Reviews confidential data, including, but not limited to, non-public records and information contained in party files, LEADS/NCIC, Court decisions, orders and other works in progress.
· Court Liaison: Acts as liaison between the Court and Jails, Police, Prosecutors, and the public. Serves subpoenas, Forcible Entry and Detainer Notices, Writs of restitution, Examinations, Show Cause notices, and Summons upon the appropriate parties within the Court’s jurisdiction (Lyndhurst, Mayfield Hts., Mayfield Village, Richmond Hts., Highland Hts., and Gates Mills) and makes all necessary returns. Removes parties from premises or makes executions on property as ordered by the Court.
· Docket Administration: Manages and administers the Judge and Magistrate’s dockets.
· Courtroom Administration: Maintains order in the Courtroom. Enforces Courtroom rules of behavior. Announces entrance of the Judge and Magistrates. Regulates the flow of people in and out of the Courtroom. Checks Courtroom for security and cleanliness and assures availability of supplies.
· Jury Administration: Facilitates and manages the jury. Accompany jurors during breaks to prevent contact with public and involved parties.
· Equipment Operation: Able to effectively operate a handgun (and be properly certified to do so), computer, printer, shredder, video equipment, telephone and paging system, copier, fax machine, and other general office equipment.
Physical Demands:
While performing duties of this job, the Bailiff frequently sits or stands for extended periods of time.
Bailiffs may sometimes be called upon to protect the Judge, Court Staff and other Courtroom visitors from physical harm and must be physically capable of preforming this task. He or she must be able to see and hear across the Courtroom and at close range. He or she must be able to isolate and quickly respond to signs of danger when they appear.

DAILY DUTIES
· LEADS computer turned on and logged in
· Obtain the docket and files for each court session
· Set up Court laptops and recording equipment
· Check in Defendants, explain and distribute necessary paperwork and forms, give Introductory Instructions
· Assure the files have necessary paperwork - LEADS, etc.
· Record Courtroom proceedings
· Maintain Courtroom, Lobby, and Probation Dept. security
· Assist Judge and Magistrates , Deputy Clerks and Probation Officers as needed
· Arrange video hearings with Police Departments
· Swear in parties required to testify
· Retrieve files from storage for the Civil Dept.
· Check and replenish Courtroom supplies, bring paper to Clerk’s Office as needed
· Take down Courtroom equipment and lock in appropriate storage location at end of day, turn off hallway computers
· Lock Courtroom doors and Prosecutor’s Office at end of day
· Other duties as assigned by the Judge or Director of Court Services/Chief Bailiff.
· Supply outside service as necessary including executing Levies, serving Evictions, and Summons, Subpoenas, taking Court mail to the post office, and making Court bank deposits.
