Guidance Counselor Assigned – Pathways Advising Coach

(INTERNAL CANDIDATES ONLY)

LOCATION:

Serving multiple schools; assigned to Office of Student Pathways (Pathways)

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:

New York State licensed and regularly appointed Counselor. For current New York City Public Schools (NYCPS), employees, you must also have been rated Satisfactory (S) for the past 3 years and have a satisfactory record of attendance and punctuality.

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Adams-Banks administration has outlined a bold vision to reimagine the educational experience for all NYCPS students so they graduate with real world skills and experience, a headstart on postsecondary, and a strong plan to put them on a path to a rewarding career and long-term economic security. Within the context of this vision, the Office of Student Pathways, under the Chief of Student Pathways, focuses on the alignment of school curriculum, instruction, and operations to ensure that all students graduate with real world skills and experience, a head start on life after high school, and a strong plan to put students on a path to a rewarding career and long-term economic security. The Office of Student Pathways provides leadership and implementation support for the NYC Public Schools Student Pathways towards Economic Security Initiative.

The College and Career Planning team (CCPT) within the Office of Student Pathways is responsible for developing and implementing strategy and policy to ensure all NYCPS students have access to high-quality college and career advising and awareness to support the development of a strong college and career plan. The CCPT leads the development and delivery of a range of capacity-building resources, training, tools and direct-to-school supports to drive improvement in the number of students graduating with a strong plan and on a path to college and career.

The Pathways Advising Coach will be a Guidance Counselor assigned who has deep experience as a practitioner and counselor-leader in following areas:

  • delivery of individualized, culturally and linguistically responsive college and career advising supports from grades 6-12;
  • implementation of data informed systems and tools to drive improvement and equity in student outcomes and targeted student supports;
  • and school programming strategies for integration of robust sequences of advising and awareness experiences across students’ school journey from grades 6-12.

    The Pathways Advising Coach will provide coaching and implementation support to school leaders, school teams, guidance counselors and staff to drive progress in middle and high school pilot cohorts toward College and Career Planning priority goals for high quality pathways advising and positive student outcomes. Reports to: SeniorDirector of College and Career Advising, Office of Student Pathways

    DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Supports Guidance Counselors, school leaders, school teams, and staff to identify strengths and areas for improvement; support development of strong systems and structures needed to build internal capacity to set goals, document and monitor progress; strengthen advising practice and whole-school coordination for delivery of high-quality college and career advising supports and development of college and career readiness culture.
    • Manages the documentation process of the progress made and concerns presented by each school; identifies and develops professional development priorities for school leaders based on school visits.
    • Supports schools and district office staff in the aligned allocation of budgetary resources provided by the College and Career Planning Team for high quality advising and awareness experiences.
    • Supports implementation of advising and awareness programs that drive school alignment to quality standards, equitable access to all NYC high school students, strong career and college-going culture and progress towards improvement goals in college and career planning.
    • Prepares and presents findings of school progress and trends across the postsecondary landscape to College and Career Planning Team and Student Pathways at large.
    • Supports the development of new partnerships in response to the needs of schools implementing college and career advising and offers guidance for expanding existing effective partnerships to provide strengthened advising resources and programs centrally and in schools across the system.
    • Engages in cross-office collaboration to provide internal capacity building support and ensure alignment of advising and awareness priority goals for school support coherence.
    • Supports Office of Student Pathways strategic communication efforts to ensure consistent messaging around advising and awareness supports and priorities.
    • Supports the Senior Director with preparing internal reports for senior leadership, some of which include policy, evaluation, and implementation recommendations that may be confidential in nature.
    • Develops strategic project plans to manage the systems, processes, and resources for school support portfolio.
    • Represents the College and Career Planning Team in meetings with internal and external stakeholders, as needed.
    • Provides program design input and support to the Senior Director of College and Career Advising and provides recommendations to the College and Career Planning Team leadership on overall program design, taking into account feedback from the field.
    • Maintains exceptional level of content expertise, based on the latest research within the field of student pathways and college and career advising and awareness, including participation in professional learning content-related conferences and associations.

    SELECTION CRITERIA:

  • Demonstrated expertise in college and career advising, including 3 years of work as dedicated college and career advisor OR completion of advising and awareness credential OR both – preference will be given to candidates with all the aforementioned
  • Extensive expertise and experience as a practitioner in the following areas:
      • delivery of individualized, culturally and linguistically responsive college and career advising supports;
      • implementation of data informed systems and tools to drive improvement and equity in student outcomes and targeted student supports;
      • school programming strategies for integration of robust sequences of advising and awareness experiences across students’ school journey from grades 6-12.
  • Proven success in staff development and whole-school capacity building in each of the above areas.
  • Understands success in development of resources and tools to support implementation of high-quality college and career advising.
  • Candidate has an extensive knowledge of all NYC Public Schools policies regarding student programming, promotion and graduation requirements, and college and career planning.
  • Show excellence in written and oral communication skills, including public speaking, meeting facilitation, and the ability to develop concise summaries and presentations.
  • Shows an ability to invest, motivate and engage others.
  • Shows ability to troubleshoot, problem-solve, and anticipate issues needing resolution.
  • Demonstrates strong attention to detail, exceptionally well-organized, and ability to meet tight, frequent and changing deadlines.

WORK YEAR/HOURS:

Per UFT Collective Bargaining Agreement

9:00 AM - 5:00 PM Monday Through Friday, unless otherwise specified in the assignment

School Year (September 5, 2023, through June 30, 2024) plus five additional days winter, spring or summer recess pursuant to UFT contract, to be determined by supervisor.

The hours of service of a guidance counselor shall be thirty-seven and one-half hours per week exclusive of a daily thirty-minute lunch period. Flexibility for earlier start or later finish to the day with approval of supervisor. Requirement to work up to 30 per session days during summer vacation period, starting July 2023.
