Department Information
The Veterans and Military Programs Office serves service members, veterans, and their affiliated family members maximize their educational experience through student engagement and a Veterans Resource Center. The Veterans and Military Programs Office is your modern study lounge with computers, wireless internet access, and a knowledgeable staff to support you with your transition to UWG by providing assistance with technology and applications, connect you to on-campus resources, and assist you on your career path by hosting career workshops and connecting you with opportunities through Career Services.
Job Summary
This position is reporting to the Director of Strategic Initiatives. The manager will plan, organize, and coordinate services, activities, and programs related to military affiliated students. The manager will assist student veterans and connect them to campus and community resources. Position requires knowledge of military culture, transitioning from the military to civilian and/or college environment, and the challenges of military affiliated students. Position chairs the Veteran Advisory Council.
Responsibilities
1 - 40%
- Plan, coordinate, market, and facilitate the Veteran and Military Programs activities, programs, and services related to military-affiliated student. Recommend new programs designed to enhance student development and success.
2 - 30%
- Provide advisory support to military-affiliated student as they transition to college, including knowledge of admissions, financial aid, and benefits. Connect current and prospective students with resources to supplement and enhance the academic experience, student retention, and graduation. Provide guidance and support for academic and non-academic issues. Assist with prospective student inquiries, follow-up, and outreach.
3 - 20%
- Responsible for understanding and interpreting the needs of student veterans to staff, faculty and administration officials. Develop collaborative partnerships with a variety of university departments. Provide educational programs related to military cultural competence. Chair the Veteran Advisory Council and serve as the advisor for the Student Veteran Association.
4 - 10%
- Develop collaborative partnerships with a variety of external constituents. Maintain positive and productive relationships with external veterans' offices and organizations.
Required Qualifications
Educational Requirements
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent years if related experience.
Required Experience
- One (1) year of experience working in a higher education setting in an advisory, administrative, program coordination, recruiting or educational capacity.
- Knowledge of military culture, transitioning from the military to civilian and/or college environment, and the challenges of military affiliated students.
Preferred Qualifications
Additional Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree from an accredited instituion of higher education in Communication, Business, Education, or related field.
Preferred Experience
- Three (3) years of experience in U.S. military.
- Three (3) years of experience at an institution of higher education.
- Experience conducting in-person or online education or training programs.
- Basic proficiency in social media mangement.
Proposed Salary
$45,056 - $52,356 / annually
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
- Normal office environment with long periods of sitting at times.
- Coordinates with Director of Strategic Initiatives and divisional budget manager for budget alignment.
- Position plays a significant role in providing support and programming to our Veteran and Military students. The support and growth of this population is critical for the university to continue moving forward.
