Job description
Position: Mechanical Engineer
Big Metal Additive (BMA) is an engineering and manufacturing company. We produce high value customized metal components for our space, aerospace, maritime, energy and industrial customers. We provide value added engineering services with these products. BMA has captured and executed engineering development projects for pressure vessels, cryogenic tanks, satellite chassis components, air vehicle components and other products. We are now in a phase of production readiness for several products which require strict compliance with material standards, process standards, performance requirements, inspection requirements and adherence to our Quality Management System.
We are looking for a professional Mechanical Engineer experienced with CAD, CAM and CAE software and metal product manufacturing operations. We produce large metal products with CNC controlled additive manufacturing machines and robots. The Mechanical Engineer provides the digital analysis, model adjustments and toolpath work instructions to operate the machines. Experience with CAM for CNC machining is a prerequisite. Working closely with Manufacturing Engineers, Operators and Quality Engineers is considered daily teamwork.
Our company culture has a lean business model with hardworking, professional people, and an emphasis on a respectful and pleasant work environment. Our leadership team includes a globally recognized, award winning founder who continues to challenge the team with exciting new opportunities. BMA has recently won a prestigious industry Innovation Award for which we were nominated by a customer.
Description:
Big Metal Additive is seeking an experienced Mechanical Engineer responsible for product digital design and manufacturing. Customer CAD models are analyzed for producibility, and recommendations are made for adjustments to improve manufacturing. The additive manufacturing process is planned in CAM software, creating toolpaths, and verifying them with simulation. Toolpaths are post processed for a CNC controller and shared with a Manufacturing Engineer; close collaboration on machine operation and performance is a big part of the job. The BMA process uses MIG welding to produce large, sophisticated components – therefore MIG welding experience is helpful to understand the manufacturing process. Weekly assignments include coordinating activities for multiple manufacturing projects and development efforts, prioritizing tasks appropriately to deliver on a range of responsibilities.
The Mechanical Engineer shall use CAD software to examine, analyze and manipulate customer digital models. The Mechanical Engineer shall plan toolpaths for the additive manufacturing process using CAM software. The Mechanical Engineer shall simulate the toolpaths in a virtual environment for validation and post process the toolpaths to CNC code. The Mechanical Engineer shall work closely with BMA teammates during the additive manufacturing process to adjust toolpaths, part design or CNC code. Responsibilities include creating and editing production work instructions, accurate daily project documentation, and complying with quality standards and customer requirements.
Experience with Siemens NX is highly valued. Experience working in a factory manufacturing environment with Additive Manufacturing or CNC type machines is necessary. Work experience in an AS9100 or API Q1 quality management manufacturing environment is important (ISO9001 may be considered). This position reports to the General Manager and includes frequent cross functional collaboration with other BMA engineers.
Good technical writing skills are critical. Effective creation/editing high quality, technical PowerPoint presentations and written reports are essential. Regular documentation of operations, processes, and records are essential. Meeting deadlines on time is imperative.
The company values at Big Metal Additive are hard-working, high integrity founded on personal accountability and kind behavior that embodies acceptance of other people. It can be a professionally demanding workplace but for those who match the company values, it is a rewarding place to work.
Big Metal Additive (BMA) is committed to manufacturing high-quality metal components that meet or exceed the requirements and expectations of our customers. This will be ensured by having an efficient and reliable Quality Management System in accordance with AS9100D and API Q1. We will actively pursue measurable and continuous improvement of our products, processes, and people. Everyone at BMA is expected and encouraged to be a champion for quality, continuous improvement, and customer satisfaction.
Requirements:
· US Citizen with BS engineering degree from accredited engineering college
· Significant experience CAD, CAM and simulations (NX preferred)
· Significant experience with CNC manufacturing operations
· Significant experience with business operations software and applications: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote and Outlook
· Experience operating, documenting, and delivering within a Quality Management System manufacturing environment
· Experience with engineering MIG welding
5+ years’ experience in manufacturing, mechanical, metallurgical, or engineering fields involving complex or high-performance products compliant with quality standards and delivered to customers.
Additional Information:
