Job description
The Role
You will be working in a rapidly evolving business area, often in challenging regulatory and legal environments. You will be a part of a global and virtual team of capable and motivated individuals and, as such, will benefit from the ability to work and form relationships with a diverse set of individuals. The position calls for a self-motivated, entrepreneurial and responsible individual with the ability to perform well under pressure.
Where you fit in
Nature Based Solutions (NBS) comprise all activities related to the protection of or (re-) development of natural ecosystems resulting in natural carbon sequestration, and the marketing, trading and sale of resulting carbon credits and other services and products. NBS are expected to play a material role in tackling climate change (this report from NGO The Nature Conservancy gives a good overview) and have also been identified as a potentially material lever to achieve Shell’s announced Net Carbon Footprint ambition.
The NBS team in Emerging Energy Solutions is developing Shell’s business model and growth approach to realize NBS’s potential for Shell. This includes pursuing project investments that will yield carbon credits in the near term, but also more programmatic approaches with global multilaterals and land resource holders to assess what role Shell can play in the development of these resources.
This effort is being conducted in concert with other teams in Shell who are involved with NBS. There is a sizeable Environmental Products Trading Business in Shell Trading that already serves internal and external customers seeking to offset GHG and other emissions. There are also pilots being conducted in various Downstream LoBs, aimed at assessing the potential of carbon neutral energy product sales to Shell customers.
What’s the role?
As a NBS Technical Adviser Agriculture, you will be leading the development of sustainable agriculture and land management (SALM) carbon projects to support our ambitious business growth. You will also identify, evaluate and develop a range of opportunities working with partners to manage risk and effective implementation at scale across the regions. . This work is central to the NBS strategy to build a diversified portfolio of projects, across multiple pathways. Pathways is one of the five core capabilities that are being developed within the NBS Development Team (alongside Technical, Geomatics, Innovation and HSSE) as key contributors to enable and support the NBS business growth.
The role is an opportunity to join NBS at the shaping stage, not just in Shell but also in the broader societal and corporate space.
More specific responsibilities include:
- Design new or evaluate existing agricultural projects with strong potential for originating carbon credits and strong alignment with environmental, social and economic sustainability principles
- Ensure that the design of the carbon projects in agriculture represents the optimal integrated solution for the given farming system, combining opportunities for emission reduction and carbon removals while considering trade-offs with other key performance indicators such as yield and profitability
- Although carbon solutions help mitigate carbon change, agricultural projects will also have to be designed or evaluated for their adaptive capacity by the project manager. This adaptive capacity will have to respond to the expected climate change impact in the region of the project by considering current and future limiting factors.
- Develop the implementation plan together with the project partner, ensuring planned field activities within the agricultural project are realistic and pragmatic implementation and fully aligned with the monitoring requirements in line with the carbon methodology
- Be the ‘go-to’ expert on carbon methodologies for agricultural projects, with an active external network so that you remain informed and contribute to new developments in the area
- Collaborating with NBS’ regional technical teams as well as field and knowledge partners for the design and implementation of specific projects.
What we need from you?
We’re keen to hear from individuals with professional experience working in agriculture and rural areas with emphasis on project management and implementation. You’ll also call on your Bachelor’s/Master’s degree in Agriculture, Agronomy, Agricultural Economics, Environment or similar field.
We also hope you possess the following skills and experience:
Additional studies in project management and project design in agriculture- Strong skills in agronomy and integrated soil fertility management
- Knowledge of regenerative agriculture/climate smart agriculture, preferably in smallholder settings
- Good knowledge of soil science and integrated soil fertility management
- Experience in rural surveys and training farmer communities
- Experience in soil sampling and analysis protocols
- Deep understanding of carbon certification standards, regulatory accounting, auditing requirements, and practical implications and opportunities
- Strong relationship skills and ability to gain trust and credibility quickly with wide range of internal and external stakeholders
- Strong project management skills, with ability to work through complexity and uncertainty
- A hunger for success, with hands-on experience in developing business strategies to develop and grow new opportunities for Shell
- Ability to work with key Shell business colleagues and become an integral part of virtual teams by adding value and bringing solutions
- Excellent communication and presentation skills
