Position Summary
The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is seeking outstanding applicants for a tenure-eligible open-rank faculty position with a joint appointment in the Department of Orthopaedics and the Joint Department of Biomedical Engineering (BME) to lead a basic science research program in regenerative medicine and/or rehabilitation engineering applied to orthopaedics. Both departments have a supportive and collaborative environment, and we welcome candidates whose research, teaching, or service has prepared them to contribute to our commitment to diversity and inclusion in higher education. Our mission is to bridge the scientific gaps between biomedical engineering and orthopaedic research leading to translational advancements in musculoskeletal innovations that improve patient care.
The new faculty member will be expected to establish a successful interdisciplinary research program, actively participate in graduate or undergraduate teaching programs in BME, and periodically participate in the basic science/research curriculum for the Orthopaedic residency program. The specific teaching requirements will be tailored to the expertise of the individual and the needs of the departments. This position will foster interactions and collaborations with both clinical and research faculty in basic science, clinical, and engineering departments at UNC-Chapel Hill and North Carolina State University (NC State).
UNC-Chapel Hill has a very strong research infrastructure. External research funding surpasses more than $1B, and the School of Medicine (SOM) is ranked #6 among public medical schools for NIH funding with 18 departments ranked in the top 25 and all basic science departments ranked in the top 10. UNC’s 36 Centers and Programs support interdisciplinary research with more than 80 state-of-the-art cores across the SOM and campus. The Department of Orthopaedics has a long history of clinical excellence and serving the needs of the people of North Carolina who suffer musculoskeletal injury or disease. UNC Orthopaedics is an academic-practice with 10 distinct sub-specialty divisions, and faculty in each division are unanimously supportive of research growth, and most are research-active with interest in clinical and/or basic science research. Founded in 2003, the Joint Department of Biomedical Engineering (BME) is a unique collaboration between the excellent clinical and translational environment of the nationally ranked UNC Hospitals and School of Medicine, the strong academic and research core of the UNC College of Arts and Sciences, and the top-ranked College of Engineering at North Carolina State University (NC State).
Together, Orthopaedics and BME provide a rich environment that fosters collaboration and success for research programs relating to musculoskeletal health and orthopaedics. In addition to outstanding opportunities for collaboration and access to state-of-the-art resources in Orthopaedics and BME, this joint appointment provides access to other excellent resources, including the NIH-supported NC Translational and Clinical Sciences (NC TraCS) Institute, Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, Eshelman School of Pharmacy, and Gillings School of Global Public Health at UNC; the College of Veterinary Medicine, Comparative Medicine Institute, and College of Textiles at NC State; and the Closed-Loop Engineering for Advanced Rehabilitation (CLEAR) research community across UNC and NC State. UNC is also a leader in imaging with the Biomedical Research Imaging Center providing researchers with access to a wide array of cutting-edge technologies for human imaging, animal imaging, and cyclotron/radiochemistry.
