Job Description:
Primary Purpose of Role:
As Corporate Paralegal, you will have two primary responsibilities. Under the direction of the Corporate Counsel – Intellectual Property, you will provide a wide range of intellectual property services to Allison, including procuring and managing Allison’s intellectual property assets and facilitate management of Allison Legal processes. You will also provide support for IP assertion/enforcement efforts and for IP due diligence in transactional matters and M&A activities. In addition, you will be responsible for managing Allison’s outside counsel billing tool, which includes managing the opening, processing and reviewing of outside counsel matters.

In this role, you will be required to demonstrate a willingness to learn and have the ability to identify and assess risk and collaborate effectively with internal team members, business partners and outside counsel to meet business objectives.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Maintain the intellectual property docket and prepare documents relating to intellectual property filings (patent, copyright & trademark).
  • Manage receipt and docketing of Records of Invention (ROIs), communicate with inventors, and timely manage receipt and filing of formal documents.
  • Oversee execution and legalization of documents for submission in intellectual property matters.
  • Assist in the implementation and maintenance of legal records for Allison’s intellectual property portfolio.
  • Prepare and file applications to register copyrights for Allison’s major publications.
  • Manage correspondence with outside IP counsel, including review and analysis of incoming correspondence and identify and execute appropriate course of action.
  • Assist with intellectual property due diligence related to M&A activities and other transactional matters.
  • Assist with IP assertion/enforcement matters.
  • Own the legal matter management process from creation to close.
  • Research and troubleshoot issues with outside counsel.
  • Ensure compliance with outside counsel billing guidelines and related engagement letters.
  • Partner and communicate with internal matter owners and outside counsel to ensure adherence to processes and controls.
  • Continually assess and design efficient billing tool procedures and process flows.
  • Other duties and special projects as assigned.
Qualifications:
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and presentation skills, with ability to communicate information effectively to non-lawyers at all levels of the business.
  • Knowledge and experience in the areas of patent, trademark, copyright, and other relevant intellectual property law.
  • Familiarity with standard practices of U.S. and foreign intellectual property offices (USPTO, Copyright Office, EPO, PCT, WIPO, etc.).
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with good judgment and sound decision-making ability to allow partnering with outside counsel billing staff and internal Allison attorneys.
  • Strong organization, time management and task prioritization skills. Highly motivated self-starter with the ability to learn and apply new information relevant to the position.
  • Organized and detail oriented.
  • Able to exercise initiative, judgment, discretion and decision-making to achieve organizational objectives and elevate matters to Legal leadership at appropriate times.
Experience:
  • 5+ years of relevant legal experience in a law firm, in-house, or government setting.
  • Experience preparing and filing documents and forms related to U.S. and foreign patents, trademarks and copyrights.
  • Experience with IP docket and legal billing management (CPi and Thompson Reuters Legal Tracker experience a plus)
