General Summary

Performs general duty law enforcement work in the protection of life and property through the enforcement of laws and ordinances; does related work as required.

This is general duty law enforcement work and involves performing law enforcement assignments, which are received from officers of superior rank. The work normally consists of patrol, traffic regulations, and investigative duties in a designated area on an assigned shift, which may be performed in cruiser cars. The work may involve an element of personal danger, and employees must be able to act without direct supervision and to exercise independent judgment in meeting emergencies. Incumbents in this class may receive special assignments which call upon specialized abilities and knowledge usually acquired through training courses or experience on the force. Assignments and general instructions are received from the shift Sergeant of Lieutenant who reviews work methods and results through reports, personal inspection, and discussion.

Essential Functions

· Patrols a designated area of the county or city in a radio cruiser car to preserve law and peace, to prevent and discover the commission of crime, and to enforce traffic and parking regulations;

· Answers calls and complaints involving drunkenness, domestic violence, fires, thefts, accidents, and other misdemeanors and felonies, and provides a variety of other miscellaneous services;

· Directs traffic and gives routine information to the public;

· On assignment answers police telephone, receiving complaints, inquiries, and requests for police assistance;

· Keeps a lookout for drunk drivers;

· Checks buildings for evidence of break-ins or vandalism;

· Secures information as to nature and location of any reported offenses of accidents;

· As radio dispatcher, occasionally assigns personnel and equipment to scene of disturbance, accident, crime, or any emergency;

· Investigates complaints and apprehends juveniles suspected of committing crimes or misdemeanors;

· Investigates reports of child neglect and of persons reported to be contributing to the delinquency of minors;

· Conducts accident investigations, providing first aid for the injured and taking safeguards to prevent further accidents;

· Interviews principals and witnesses at accident scenes, taking written statements, examining vehicles and roadways, observing control devices and obstructions to view;

· Takes necessary street measurements and prepares collision diagram;

· Clears accident scene of obstructions and wreckage and maintains traffic flow;

· Testifies in court;

· Searches prisoners;

· Appears in court to present evidence and testify against persons accused of crimes;

· Investigates reports of missing persons and cars;

· Maintains surveillance over persons and places suspected of illegal operations;

· Keeps records and makes reports of activities;

· Participates in formal and informal training activities;

· Transports prisoners;

· Serves civil and arrest warrants

· Performance of coroner duties for assigned deputies;

· Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

· Good social skills and general intelligence; ability to cope with situations firmly, courteously, tactfully, and with respect for the rights of others;

· Ability to analyze situations quickly and objectively, and to determine proper course of action; ability to learn modern law enforcement procedures and techniques, basic first aid, principles of investigation and interrogation, and applicable laws and ordinances;

· Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions and to express oneself clearly and concisely, orally and in writing;

· Ability to demonstrate proficiency in the use of firearms.

· Ability to secure a Tennessee State driver’s license at the time of appointment;

· Good powers of observation and memory; excellent moral character;

· Ability to operate a two-way radio communications;

· Ability to operate motor vehicles safely in all weather and emergency conditions.

Education & Certifications

· Must be a POST Certified Officer

· Possess High School Degree or equivalent

Physical Demands

· Physical Force & Activity: Position requires the occasional use of muscle force to push, pull, lift, or carry a heavy object. Occasionally requires some physical effort in performing series of tasks. Requires movement of the body from place to place and sometimes requires overall body coordination. Requires ability to keep hands and arms steady while making movements. Requires physical strength and agility. Ability to perform physical tasks such as running, stooping, crawling, bending, pushing and pulling light to heavy objects, walking, climbing ladders. Physical strength and coordination to restrain an individual.

· Tactile & Sensory Coordination: Requires coordinated use of hands, fingers, and arms to grasp, move, or assemble objects. Task requires color, sound, taste, odor, depth, texture, and visual perception and discrimination. It may also require oral communications ability.

Pay Scale, Work Hours and Benefits

Current Entry Level Rate of Pay: $18.40 per hour

Work Hours: 12 hour shifts, 14 days in a 28 day cycle ending with seven days off in a row

Benefits: Health/Vision/Dental Insurance, TCRS, Paid time off, holidays and sick days

POST Certified Officer

· Pay based on experience

· Three year contract

· $2,500 sign on bonus

Certified Officer – Out-of-State

· Pay based on experience
