Full Time: May 1 – September 8
Work Schedule: Monday-Friday 7:45am -5:00pm with assigned weekend and July 4 Holiday work
required.
Compensation/Salary Range: $15,200.00 - $19,000.00 commensurate with educational background, skill level
and work experience.

The mission of the Boothbay Sea and Science Center is the advancement of sailing, boating and ocean sciences
by minimizing economic and physical obstacles and further to develop independence, self-confidence,
teamwork and volunteerism in the participants. To inspire individuals to strengthen themselves and their
community through the enjoyment of the sea. The Boothbay Sea and Science Center’s vision is a community
sailing and science education center that offers equal and affordable access to waterfront activities for youth
through sailing programs and experiential learning activities not typically provided by other regional
organizations.

The Boothbay Sea and Science Center (BSSC) is hiring a Principal Waterfront Instructor to teach onshore
and offshore youth sailing and manage safe operations of all waterfront activities for the BSSC. This
position will assist the Principal Marine Science Instructor with implementing the weekly marine science
curriculum. The ideal candidate should have a strong work ethic, strong sense of responsibility to others,
be self-motivated, have demonstrated management skills, relevant experiences of working with youth of
all ages, and a demonstrated proficiency in sailing and power boating. This position is responsible for
assisting the Principal Marine Science Instructor with implementing curriculum and field activities for all
Summer Program Topics for hands-on experiential learning. The Principal Waterfront Instructor is
expected to organize and plan daily and weekly waterfront sailing activities that take advantage of the
vast resources that the Boothbay Region has to offer.

  • An interest in the Marine Sciences is highly desirable.


General Duties and Responsibilities:

Ø Reports to the Executive Director. The BSSC Executive Director oversees all operations and
programs at the Center.

Ø Manages/Supervises Instructors, Assistants, Apprentices, and Volunteers for all sailing related
activities and onshore and on the water safety.

Ø Implements BSSC guidelines, policies, procedures, schedule, and programming verbally and in
writing through understanding and updates to the Staff Handbook.

Ø Meets weekly with the Executive Director and Principal Marine Science Instructor to coordinate
on-the-water activities with onshore activities every Thursday at the close of the program.

Ø Organizes, plans, schedules and reviews daily waterfront activities each week , including
equipment, and assigning staff duties at Monday morning staff meetings.

Ø Maintains efficient operation of and assures safety of all waterfront and onshore equipment by
inspecting, cleaning and repairing daily throughout the program.

Ø Oversees the management of all BSSC onshore and offshore equipment during weekends,
assigning at least one staff member to monitor the security of this equipment.

Ø Collaborates with all Principal Marine Science Instructors on all program curriculum goals and
outcomes and implements Pre and Post Participant Evaluations.

Ø Enforces, at all times, the utmost safety of all participants on and off the water.
Ø Adheres to, communicates, and enforces all of the policies and procedures established by the

Boothbay Sea and Science Center’s Board of Directors and the BSSC Program Committee.
Ø Develops skill evaluation tools (i.e. “star chart”, daily anecdotal notes, etc.).
Ø Maintains, weekly, equipment repair and maintenance logs.
Ø Respects utmost confidentiality when managing and processing all participant records.
Ø Oversees the writing of a weekly article by Sailing and Science Instructors about the goings on

at the Center for publication in the BSSC column in the Boothbay Register and emails the article
to the Executive Director every Sunday before 5:00 PM

Ø Attends all staff meetings.
Ø Assists in the planning and actively participates in Friday cookouts, evening socials, fundraising

events, and any other activities that enhances community and family participation.
Ø Collaborates with the Executive Director on the purchase of all equipment.

At End of Season:
Ø Submits to the Executive Director participant Pre and Post Evaluations.
Ø Submits to the Executive Director all program curriculums, equipment inventory, maintenance

and repair logs.
Ø Reviews and updates Safety Policy in Staff Handbook.
Ø Manages the storage of all program equipment including cleaning and seasonal maintenance.

Minimum Qualifications: All qualifications are required at time of employment.
1. Level 1 US Sailing Certification or its equivalent.
2. Extensive experience working with and/or teaching youth of all ages.
3. SafeSport Certification: www.ussailing.org
4. Boaters Safety Course National Association of State Boating Law Administrators:

5. Current First Aid, CPR and AED Certifications *


Prefered Qualifications:

1. Level 2 US Sailing Certification
2. USCG License

3. Postsecondary level Marine Science Courses or equivalent
4. American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification


  • BSSC will reimburse half (50%) of the Certification Fees (if applicable and only upon successful completion of
the course).

Other:
All BSSC staff are required to undergo a mandatory background check and agree to the terms and conditions
of BSSC’s Code of Conduct (COC) - always mindful that all staff and participants are adhering to the same
standards of behavior set forth in the COC document. BSSC staff are required to attend staff orientation that
includes Sexual Harassment Prevention and Implicit Bias training programs. The BSSC has a zero tolerance
policy for the use of drugs and alcohol during work hours. Any such use during the workday or during a trip
with participants will result in immediate termination of the employment contract and suspension of further
payments/salary from the Boothbay Sea and Science Center. Smoking is not allowed, at any time, at BSSC.
