Department of Emergency Medicine has an outstanding opportunity for Public Information Specialist.

The Department of Emergency Medicine within the School of Medicine at the University of Washington is comprised of core faculty, contracted faculty, courtesy faculty, resident physicians, and fellows spread across three major sites: Harborview Medical Center (HMC), University of Washington Medical Center (UWMC & NW), and Seattle Children's Hospital (SCH). Emergency Medicine (EM) faculty represents the front line in HMC and UWMC hospital emergency departments and serve the City of Seattle, King County, and WWAMI (Washington/Wyoming/Alaska/Montana/Idaho).

Emergency Medicine has an outstanding opportunity for a Communications Specialist to fulfill an important role within the Department. The incumbent in this role will partner with senior leadership to support the Department’s communication operations, including identifying and creating content relevant to operations and disseminating to appropriate audiences.

Success in this role requires a high degree of personal initiative, flexibility, and personal judgment with strong communication skills and an expert ability to organize and prioritize tasks. This position also requires an exemplary ability to adjust to rapid changes and the ability to perform all duties in a manner that promotes a team concept that reflects the mission, vision and values of Emergency Medicine. This position is located at Harborview Medical Center and reports to the Department Assistant Director and the Department Chair.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

COMMUNICATIONS
  • This position will spearhead the department’s communications initiatives.


  • Serve as primary writer (interview, edit, and write in-depth stories) for the EMERGENCY MEDICINE’s Website, EMERGENCY MEDICINE publications and social media accounts. Work with Program leadership to develop web sections and pages; ensure content is reflected consistently throughout the site. Provide social media coordination, tweet according to Faculty Website Chair’s schedule. Develop strategies and content for alumni relations. (25%)

  • Researches, recommends and develops new strategies and forms of outreach and seeks opportunities to promote Emergency Medicine activities through approved and established outlets. Including written, photo and video media. Implement content strategy for all digital presences; monitor industry trends and provide analysis and improvements for online presences. (10%)

  • Plans, develops and produces written materials including information sheets, displays, slide programs, research posters and other educational materials related to departmental programs. Create content that is congruent with the organization’s values, goals and mission to achieve success. Collaborate with central UW communications for appropriate content coverage in accordance with UW policy and procedures (15%)

  • Interviews faculty/staff to identify and develop stories on research and related departmental news worthy projects and create content that can be translated to meaningful language. Provide expert public affairs advice and training, as needed, to faculty and administrators (15%)

  • Manage the collection of all content (requests and follow-up) and manage editing of text content; work closely with faculty leadership to ensure projects are executed in a timely and efficient manner. (10%)

  • Provide regular updates to the website, follow established schedule of daily/weekly website updates; update news and events section weekly. Also ensure content and images are professional, accurate, timely and effective in communicating EM news and events, research, and programs. (10%)

  • Create and update faculty awards and honors (kudos) for monthly presentations, PowerPoint, website and hall monitor distribution. (10%)

  • Attend and cover Department events including but not limited to residency graduation, holiday staff recognition, spring faculty celebration in order to highlight in newsletters, articles for the websites, etc. (5%)

  • Responsibilities may include communications internally and externally in times of emergency (ad hoc)


  • MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor's in Social Sciences, Communications, or Liberal Arts plus two to three years of work experience in project management/implementation.


  • Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

    ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.

  • Ability to multitask, priorities, adapt to change, and work well under pressure.

  • Strong interpersonal skills, with ability to handle and maintain confidential information.

  • Proficiency in MS Office applications: MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.

  • Ability to work early morning, evening or weekends on occasion may be required to meet department goals.


  • DESIRED:

    Knowledge of UW systems and policies and procedures.
