Job Summary

In the Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology at Harvard University, we research and teach how the collective behavior of molecules and cells forms the basis of life. The Bellono Lab, has an opening for a Research Assistant I. The successful candidate will perform tasks related to the research project independently while under the guidance and mentorship of the supervisor.

Position Description

The Bellono Lab seeks a highly-motivated individual to work at a unique intersection of cell biology, physiology, and animal behavior to understand molecular mechanisms which give rise to specialized organismal traits. The Research Assistant will study cell physiology in a variety of unusual model organisms (octopus, sharks, photosynthetic animals, and others). Self-driven candidates should have at least one year of previous molecular or biochemistry lab experience. The primary responsibilities of this position are as follows:

  • Molecular biology including cloning, qPCR, sequence analysis, western blots, and other basic assays.
  • Biochemistry including protein purification and other basic assays.
  • Work closely within the group, including attending lab meetings, interacting with collaborators, and potentially contributing to manuscripts a co-author.
  • Occasional and minor work with marine organisms including octopus, sharks, and others.

Basic Qualifications

College background or equivalent work experience, preferably in a related discipline.

Additional Qualifications and Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in biological or physical sciences.
  • At least one year related work experience (relevant course work may count towards experience).
  • Hands-on work experience using molecular biology and biochemistry techniques
  • Self-motivated and ability to perform complex tasks in an independent and effective manner
  • Strong Communication Skills
  • Organizational skills and attention to detail

Working Conditions

This position does not offer hybrid remote/in person work flexibility. There is an expectation that employees be able to work in person in Cambridge, MA.

This is a one- year term position with possibility of extension contingent on performance and funding.
