The Research Manager will play a critical role in building the customer and audience research team inside Patagonia. In this role you will define, prioritize among, and answer key customer- and audience-focused questions. You will execute end-to-end quantitative and qualitative research to drive decision-making and reduce decision-risk for teams across Patagonia, including Marketing, Business Units, Digital, and Sales. You will also build a research team and manage vendor-led research to achieve Patagonia’s research goals. If you have exceptional quantitative research skills and ability to execute self-directed research, and a desire to coach a team and grow research inside Patagonia, this role is for you.
What You’ll Do

Lead Patagonia-wide customer and audience research efforts, driving increased engagement, activism, and retention

Define key research questions, prioritize among research projects, and set a research calendar in partnership with teams across Patagonia including Business Units, Marketing, Digital, and Sales

Design and lead end-to-end quantitative and qualitative research to provide foundational knowledge, tactical decision-support, and outcome evaluation

Deliver research that informs all stages of marketing campaign development and measurement (e.g. concept testing; creating a common foundation of knowledge around key target audiences, supporting campaign measurement)

Manage internal research resources (e.g. Qualtrics) and vendor-supported research to achieve Patagonia’s research goals

Utilize existing insights and analytics team findings to systematize recommendations that will further drive loyalty and action in Patagonia’s audiences

Identify opportunities for leveraging customer and digital data, in collaboration with insights and analytics teams

Clearly communicate research findings, converting complex data into understandable recommendations, visualizations, and written reports

As the Research team grows, you will build and then manage a team who you will lead in executing the above responsibilities
Who You Are

You are extremely analytical and experienced in using various methods and approaches to solve problems

You are a strong communicator and can clearly articulate complex ideas in simple terms to people with varying technical abilities through presentations, meetings, project plans, analyses, and other media

You have experience coaching and managing others (whether in a direct reporting line or on a project basis) and have a strong desire to coach and build teams

You are comfortable with ambiguity and can translate unclear requests or business problems into actionable next steps

You have a bias toward action and know when to act even if you don’t have all the answers yet

You have high empathy to see the world through the customers' eyes, and a curiosity to do so
Experience You Bring
-
5+ years’ experience in a quantitative research, market research, or audience research role

3+ years’ experience applying experimental design principles (quantitative and qualitative) to a business setting

Strong understanding of the strengths and shortcomings of different research methods, including when and how to apply them

Experience using research to drive decision-making at the senior leadership level

Demonstrated ability to perform statistical analysis using software applications such as R, Python, or SPSS

Ability to remain independent and effectively present complex and/or controversial topics and concepts to a wide and diverse audience

Bachelor's degree or higher in psychology, analytics, statistic, business, economics, or another technical field
