Responsible for managing a group of employees at a facility level. Provide oversight of such employees for the maintenance of locomotives. Requires several technical duties utilizing a considerable amount of creativity and perception with a wide latitude for independent action.

Education / Training:

  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering or equivalent experience.

Job Title:

Shop Manager - Locomotive Operations

Key Job Elements:

  • Manage/direct activities at locomotive maintenance facility to efficiently maintain a pool of locomotives for maximum availability;
  • Select and develop a skilled workforce and operations group to maintain the locomotive pool;
  • Develop analyze and implement programs and policies particular to the maintenance facility;
  • Ensure compliance with quality/cost/schedule requirements;
  • Interpret and evaluate data and make recommendations to company management relative to the maintenance facility;
  • Represent company to customers and communicate in a professional manner;
  • Ensure all governmental agency inspection requirements and/or procedures are accounted for and documented;
  • Maintain facility/comply with all regulations;
  • Resolve customer emergencies;
  • Manage and direct the efforts of others;
  • Track and verify task audits;
  • Schedule shift coverage and approve timekeeping data;
  • Develop and implement employee training activities;
  • Special assignments as needed;
  • Perform all responsibilities in accordance with "Our Values in Action, Caterpillar's Code of Conduct."

Qualifications and Experience:

Required:

  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering or equivalent experience;
  • High level of 6-sigma/data-analysis knowledge;
  • Excellent communication skills;
  • Working knowledge of SAP;
  • High Level of locomotive product and maintenance knowledge;
  • High level of demonstrated analytical ability;
  • Demonstrated experience in running a business unit with P/L responsibility;
  • Excellent planning and organizing skills;
  • Proven knowledge of railroad operations at both staff and field levels;
  • Previous experiences managing locomotive technical representatives;
  • Ability to travel if needed.

Preferred:

  • Broad knowledge of EMD & Class 1 Rail operations;
  • Knowledge of company service and warranty policies

and procedures;

  • Excellent computer skills, with good knowledge of database planning tools.
