Overview:
The Senior System Engineer (SSE) is a highly visible member of the NSM Infrastructure team responsible for effective provisioning, installation/configuration, operation, and maintenance of NSM systems hardware, software, network, and related infrastructure. This individual participates in technical research and development to enable continuing innovation within the overall infrastructure. This individual ensures that NSM system hardware, network, operating systems, software systems, and related procedures adhere to organizational and technical standards.
The SSE assists project teams with technical changes and configuration within planned projects and works closely in a project-oriented methodology. Such activities include the definition of needs, benefits, and technical strategy; research & development within the project lifecycle; technical analysis and design; and support of operations staff in executing, testing, and implementing the solutions.
The SSE is accountable for systems support of NSM infrastructure, both on premise, hosted and cloud. Responsibilities on these systems include SA engineering and provisioning, operations, and support, NSM ServiceDesk oversight, maintenance and research and development to ensure continual innovation. Systems Engineering and Provisioning
- Install new / rebuild existing servers and configure hardware, peripherals, services, settings, directories, storage, etc. in accordance with standards and project/operational requirements.
- Strong technical oversight of NSM infrastructure within all public and private Cloud platforms. Azure (and AWS) are the primary public Cloud platforms.
- Engineering of SA-related solutions for various NSM project and operational needs.
- Install and configure systems that support the NSM infrastructure and applications.
- Develop and maintain installation and configuration procedures for use within the NSM Infrastructure team.
- Contribute to and maintain NSM system standards.
- Research and recommend innovative, and where possible automated approaches for system administration tasks. Identify approaches that leverage NSM resources and provide economies of scale.
Operations and Support
- Perform daily system monitoring, verifying the integrity and availability of all NSM hardware, server resources, systems and key processes, reviewing system and application logs, and verifying completion of scheduled jobs such as backups. Respond to NSM-centric telephone, email and on-line requests for technical support. Documents, tracks, and monitors the problem using the NSM Service Desk Management platform.
- Perform regular security monitoring to identify any possible intrusions that could affect the effective operations of the NSM business.
- Oversee daily backup operations, ensuring all required file systems and system data are successfully backed up to the appropriate media / platform.
- Perform regular file archival and purge as necessary.
- Provide Tier II support to the NSM Service Desk.
- Repair and recover from hardware or software failures. Coordinate and communicate with impacted constituencies.
Maintenance
- Apply OS patches and upgrades on a regular basis and upgrade administrative tools and utilities. Configure / add new services as necessary.
- Upgrade and configure system software that supports NSM infrastructure applications per project or operational needs.
- Maintain operational, configuration, or other procedures in support of the NSM IT Infrastructure.
- Create and maintain documentation in support of NSM platforms.
- Perform periodic performance reporting to support capacity planning.
- Perform ongoing performance tuning, hardware upgrades, and resource optimization as required. Configure CPU, memory, and disk partitions as required.
- Maintain data center environmental (on premise), work with Cloud / host providers to ensure data center standards are maintained.
- Bachelor (4-year) degree, with a technical major, such as engineering or computer science, or equivalent experience.
- Systems Administration/System Engineer certification in Microsoft.
- 10+ years in a Windows server OS systems administration role.
- 6+ years senior system administration experience, including on-prem and Azure Cloud infrastructure.
- AWS Cloud experience a plus.
- Strong knowledge of MS Active Directory and MS Exchange. Typical experience would be more than several hundred employees.
- Strong knowledge in Windows virtual environments.
- Strong knowledge of Windows OS internals. Includes performance tuning, security, process management, systems logging.
- Strong knowledge in Windows OS and Azure Cloud security.
- Strong knowledge in support of VOIP /telephony platforms.
- Working knowledge of systems administration of Linux operating environment.
- Working knowledge of Apple operational environments (iOS, MAC OS).
- Advance knowledge in Windows power shell scripting and other automation tools.
- Strong working knowledge of Windows desktops and devices in support of the NSM business staff.
- Experience in working with a Security Operations Center (SOC) from a respond / resolve perspective.
- Knowledge in business productivity tools such as Office, Visio, PDF.
- Familiarity with supporting tablets, thin-client devices and mobile devices.
- Role requires being part of an on-call support rotational schedule.
- Availability to working evenings and weekends to meet the demands of business, sometimes with little advanced notice.
- Some travel to local or remote NSM office may be required at times in support of projects.
