Job Title: Summer Mountain Safety Manager

Department: Mountain Operations

Reports To: Director of Mountain Operations

Rate of Pay: DOE

Shift: Full-Time, Year-Round

Must be available weekends and holidays.


SUMMARY

The Summer Mountain Safety Manager's primary responsibility is to ensure that summer guests have a safe experience on the mountain while participating in Hiking, Biking and ZipTour activities. Additionally, the Summer Mountain Safety Manager will be responsible for managing summer mountain projects as it relates to winter mountain safety needs. This can include facilities maintenance, trail sign maintenance, avalanche program maintenance, equipment maintenance, etc.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Build and maintain all hiking and biking trails with proper approval.

Oversee all aspects of Bike Patrol including hiring, training, scheduling, mentoring.

Coordinate with lift operations, ZipTour operations, and SMO to ensure safe practices are followed in their respective operations.

Manage all mountain signage and ensure adequate and appropriate safety signage is in place and follows industry standards.

Oversee summer mountain safety project list provided by Ski Patrol Director at end of each winter season.

Work with Mountain Guard to ensure summer operation is in compliance with all standards.

Participate in the Accident Review Committee and provide information regarding summer risk and incidents.

Lead and train Bike Patrol in Accident Investigation to ensure consistent, thorough AI's.

Manage Bike Patrol in summer trail maintenance including biking and hiking trails.

Work with Medical Control and North Fork to establish strong relationships.

Establish and maintain all summer mountain safety policies and protocol to include; mountain evacuation, lift evacuation, lost person, adverse weather, etc. Ensure that all summer mountain staff are trained on said protocols.

Create a Level 4 Tribal culture within Summer Mountain Safety. "We are great" culture vs. "I am great".

Establish a collaborative relationship with resort safety department.

Work closely with resort legal counsel in establishing policy and protocol.

Collaborate with parking and grounds on biking traffic issues and control. Ensure safe and appropriate interactions between our biking, hiking and casual guests.

Manage all race events at Sundance including both Sundance promoted events as well as all 3rd party events.

Be strategic about the future of the Sundance mountain trail system.

When necessary, coordinate with the Forest Service on various trail maintenance projects.

Oversee all operations associated with Bike Patrol Dispatch room and triage center.

Maintain all Bike Patrol tools and resources to include rescue equipment, Ranger, medical equipment, trail tools, etc.

Assist Director of Mountain Maintenance in various mountain projects as needed.

Coordinate with Lift Operations to ensure proper Bike Patrol coverage for all special lift related events.

Oversee and carry out opening rounds and end of shift sweeps with Bike Patrol and Lift Operations.

Be an on-hill ambassador. Work with the public in a friendly manner providing assistance and education when required.

Stay current on all resort summer operation industry trends in trail building and maintenance.

Keep up to date on all best practices for summer medical, search and rescue, evacuations, etc.

Maintain consistent relationship between winter and summer with air rescue agencies and organize proper training.

Execute and document a thorough and consistent training program. Communicate well and work collaboratively with all departments.

Train staff to support the recycling program and share the Sundance story of land preservation and environmental commitment as the occasion arises.

Be a team player.

Exhibit strong leadership skills.

Lead and organize teams in high stress situations.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

One year certificate from college or technical school; or three to six months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Supervisory experience required.

Must possess high level of proficiency in high angle rescue techniques.


TECHNICAL/COMPUTER SKILLS

Must be proficient in Microsoft Office programs including Word & Excel.


CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Minimum of EMT-B

Current CPR certification.


OTHER QUALIFICATIONS

Must be 18 years of age or older.
