The Transition Coordinator will coordinate and provide leadership for transition services offered at UI REACH, provide operational and strategic leadership as part of the leadership team, and develop and collaborate with internal and external partners in the implementation of transition services.


This is a 12-month specified term position. May be eligible for renewal. Location: Iowa City, IA. Intermittent Flexibility may be provided. Position is mainly on campus in person.


Specific Job Duties and Tasks

  • Remains current on best practices in the field for supporting persons with disabilities in preparing for transition.
  • Ensure a student-centered approach in the development of transition plans.
  • Coordinate transition service activities such as
    • Oversight for Project Explore (youth)
    • Person Centered Planning (enrolled students)
    • Oversight for return to home/community planning (graduates)
    • Oversight for alumni supports (alumni)
  • Coordinate and further develop UI REACH transition services by serving as liaison with UI departments, staff, students, faculty, and families.
  • Develop and maintain relationships and establish partnerships with public and private agencies and funding entities (local and national).
  • Serve as a member of the leadership team to develop long and short-term strategies, oversee day to day operations, and provide future directions for UI REACH.
  • Provide training and support to UIR staff, students, families and other stakeholders.

About UI-Reach

  • UI REACH is a Comprehensive transition program for students ages 18-25 years old with intellectual, cognitive and learning disabilities. UI REACH offers an integrated college experience in a caring and structured environment.

Education Requirement

  • Bachelor’s degree in Education or related field is required or the equivalent combination of education and experience.

Required Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience (typically a minimum of 3 years) program management experience.
  • Demonstrated experience (typically 3 years or greater) working with students (secondary or college) with special needs and/or learning disabilities.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively within a team.
  • Experience in writing grant proposals and/or grant management.
  • Experience with transition service delivery (e.g., planning, advising, connecting with services, and making referrals) and/or working with community agencies that serve individuals with disabilities. Typical experience is three years or greater.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and meet and maintain the University of Iowa driving standards.

Desired Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in Education or related field.
  • Expertise in designing and implementing program evaluation, and research
  • Experience working with students with disabilities in a postsecondary education or college/university.
