The University of Tennessee, Knoxville is seeking to hire a UX Writer for EdPlus at UT. UX Writers operate at the intersection of content strategy, UX thinking, and technical communication. They write copy for web experiences; articulate journey maps which help guide the user experience; create and maintain technical documentation; and assist in creating a long-term strategy for content. The UX Writer reports to EdPlus's Director, Visual and Digital Design and works closely with other EdPlus and UT stakeholders to shape the strategic vision for designing digital learner experiences related to marketing, student engagement, and retention.
This role seeks to advance UT’s mission by collaborating with diverse teams, creating forward-thinking and thoughtful experiences, and ensuring content and web products support EdPlus's overall strategy and goals. The ideal candidate will thrive in a fast-paced environment. This position will also work in lock-step with UT's Office of Communications and Marketing (OCM) on the larger university standards, ensuring brand alignment and integrity. This role requires a talented and versatile individual with a deep understanding of UX best practices and the ability to balance brand guidelines with customer-focused language.
Job Duties
Content Development & Management:
- Maintain and document evolving content, brand, and voice/tone standards.
- Write clear, consistent, concise user-interface content, notifications, and product queues.
- Connect with other writers across the organization to build shared cohesive strategies.
- Produce high-quality documentation that meets applicable standards and is appropriate for its intended audience.
- Gain understanding of themes and objectives for an assignment, the target audience, and desired outcomes to ensure that the assignment meets the communication goals.
- Conduct interviews with subject matter experts; develop, gather and disseminate technical information; and write for a fully inclusive, global audience.
- Promote understanding and demonstrate the value UX writing brings to the product development process.
- Uses data and research to evaluate content's impact.

User Experience (UX):
- In collaboration with EdPlus's Marketing and Tech teams, manages content functions related to improving the user experience on the Vols Online website, including the development and implementation of digital content management and operations strategies.
- Works closely with other UX designers, engineers, UX researchers, stakeholders, content and analytics teams using storytelling to conceptualize both marketing and learning experiences by identifying ways and managing processes to improve content on all web properties
- Contributes to the larger UX community across the University by facilitating content-based projects and work groups
Relationship Development – Communication, Collaboration, & Partnership:
- Cross-functional team member who collaborates closely with all operational units within EdPlus, especially marketing and technology, and the Office of Communications and Marketing (OCM) at UT to ensure marketing and learner goals are met by implementing digital content management and UX strategies.
- Provides exceptional relationship management by creating synergies with internal teams, marketing units across campus, and external vendors/partners.
- Champions a culture of continual improvement and enhancement to our content and UX strategies.
Required Education and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Communications, Writing/Editing, User Experience (UX Design), Creative Services
- 2-5 years of relevant writing/editing, marketing, web, UX, and/or creative experience with demonstrated experience leading projects and teams.
Preferred Experience:
- Master’s degree in Marketing, Communications, Writing/Editing, User Experience (UX Design), Creative Services
- 5 years of relevant writing/editing, marketing, web, UX, and/or creative experience with demonstrated experience leading projects and teams.
- Experience working in higher education
