The Vice President’s primary role is to provide strong scientific, organizational, and global portfolio leadership for the Cancer Immunology & Immune Modulation department. This position will functionally report to the Head, Global CI&IM.

This individual will set and direct the implementation of strategic and tactical priorities to establish and progress an innovative Cancer Immunology & Immune Modulation (CI&IM) portfolio relevant to Therapeutic Areas (TAs) of interest to Boehringer Ingelheim. The Head will in addition expand research into the application of Immune Modulation principles into novel areas of treatment including infectious disease.

The Head is accountable for US Cancer Immunology (CI) and a global Immune Modulation (IM) organization, currently approximately 60 people across two sites (USA and Germany) as well as strategic input and tactical oversight of external collaborations in the area of immuno-infection. All CIIM staff in the US would report directly to the VP . The Immune Modulation team from Biberach will report locally to Dr Eric Borges, VP CI&IM Germany.

Duties & Responsibilities\:

Global CI&IM Organization Success
  • As a member of CI&IM leadership team, develop, contribute and steer the implementation of an Immune Modulation strategy that will form the basis of a first-in-class portfolio influencing multiple Therapeutic Areas (Tas) in line with the overall Discovery Research goals.
  • As Head of CI&IM US build and maintain a cohesive global IM organization to discover and mature novel immunological concepts that can feed multiple TAs
  • Expand research into the application of CI&IM principles into novel areas of treatment, especially working with Research Beyond Borders to deliver into pre-clinical development, strong technical and strategically justified data and information concepts.
  • Co-chair IM Exploratory Research Portfolio Committee (eRPC) together with partner from Medicinal Chemistry and Biotherapeutics leadership.
  • Represent CI&IM on TA Research Portfolio Committees (RPC) as needed at least to include Cancer Immunology. I&R and RBB.
  • Leadership of the RDG CI&IM scientific organization to ensure scientific and portfolio goals are met; strong collaborative oversight together with Eric Borges of the Biberach IM organization to ensure scientific and portfolio deliverables.
Cancer Immunology & Immune Modulation Discovery Activities
  • Portfolio is novel, innovative, pushing boundaries of current knowledge and utilizes all modalities available as these make sense for the NTC including NCEs, biologics, alternative approaches such as viral and vaccine technologies.
  • Meet or exceed portfolio deliverables consistent with the CI&IM and Discovery Research strategy and expectations; work to integrate these into partner TAs.
  • Ensure strong engagement with the local Ridgefield or Biberach TAs to support IM-related MoAs.
  • Ensure all relevant documentation provided to support portfolio deliverables.
  • Supplement internal NTC discovery with in-licensed compounds in the SoPreLO and LO stages.
External Research Network Establishment
  • Identify, develop and manage a network of internal and external scientific academic and biotechnology partnerships to discover novel biology and NTC that can be integrated into the IM portfolio.
  • Integrate and manage external CRO functions to enable services to be provided for IM sites globally.
  • Ensure the IM teams build a strong reputation for BI in the external community by publishing, actively participating and presenting at scientific conferences.
Internal Research Network Establishment & Staffing
  • In conjunction with Biberach, Germany CI&IM leadership, develop a strategy to adequately resource the CI US and global IM portfolio needs complementing teams’ expertise in each site.
  • Retain and develop high quality staff; performance management of direct and indirect reports strategy.
Operations and Leadership
  • Ensure compliance with all required training, safety, regulatory, HR, laboratory notebook and intellectual property activities and corporate policies for self and entire IM Ridgefield teams.

Requirements\:

  • Ph.D, and/or M.D from an accredited institution in a relevant field including Cancer Biology, Cell Biology, Immunology, Microbiology, Bacteriology, Virology and must have a strong understanding of immune modulation concepts but this could come from a number of different backgrounds including cardiometabolic, respiratory, fibrosis, infectious disease.
  • At least fifteen (15) years experience following post-doctoral studies and deep experience in target discovery or exploration of novel biological pathways that are involved in immune modulation processes.
  • Experience in the biotechnology or pharmaceutical industry is preferred but not essential, but candidates should have an appreciation of the steps needed to move early research through the drug discovery process.
  • Leadership and a strongly collaborative mindset are essential qualities given the remit of IM that works on early science, disease agnostic, but is expected to interface across multiple areas without being necessarily overly influenced by the ideas or directions of the Discovery Research-TAs.
  • A broad and innovative thinker is needed; someone who understands immunological sciences and especially how it can be applied across multiple areas of disease - those we know about now but also those we are yet to discover.
  • Must exhibit vision and leadership - has a strong presence and is a person that others will follow; can steer IM by hiring great people deep in their expertise but without necessarily being an expert in all areas for which IM may interface.
  • Background - must have a strong understanding of cancer biology and immune modulation concepts.
  • Experience in drug discovery is preferred In either case it is important that the global head understands what DR-TAs might be interested in and how to evolve novel concepts, but is still primarily driven by the scientific opportunity and is deep in the science.
  • Outstanding scientific track-record in novel areas of biology with exceptionally strong research and publication record that ensures a gravitas and level of respect amongst peers, staff and external collaborators.
  • Strong leadership skills including supervising, mentoring and developing multiple scientific groups, ideally as part of teams with direct PhD-level reports.
  • Requires the ability to communicate effectively by oral presentation, written technical reports and scientific publications.
  • Requires the ability to communicate effectively complex scientific ideas both internally and externally.
  • This position is based in Ridgefield CT but willingness to interact globally with colleagues in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and the USA including occasional travel to global research sites especially Biberach Germany.
  • Fluency in spoken and written English essential. Ability to communicate in the German Language would be an advantage.
