About the Department

The Department of Computer Science has a rich history of advancing and defining new fields of discovery at the cutting edge of computing, and this tradition continues today. Our inquiry and impact spans from theory to human-computer interaction to AI and Data Science. Our department’s technical Staff (Techstaff) oversees all instructional, research, systems engineering/administration needs in the Department of Computer Science and is the Department’s front line of defense for computer security. We are part of the Physical Sciences Division which includes academic departments and several interdisciplinary research institutes and centers. We are located in Hyde Park and this position is eligible for a hybrid work schedule.

Job Summary

Assist the technical team with all aspects of systems management. Primary role is to learn the operations infrastructure, attend meetings, write basic automations, fix errors and bugs, and assist the senior members of the team with all architecture and administration tasks.

We are looking for an enthusiastic junior computer systems administrator to join our experienced team. Your primary focus will be to learn our site's utilities and infrastructure, gather data from users, and respond to requests from senior members of our team. You will carry out software installations, upgrades, and configurations to the Linux and MacOS operating systems. You will monitor and tune systems while performing routine audits and remediation procedures on both workstation and server-class systems.

To ensure success, you should have a good working knowledge of basic Linux utilities, the ability to learn quickly, and work in a team setting. A top-class Systems Administrator II will provide valuable support to the team while improving their own systems skills.

Techstaff works primarily with Python, Ruby, PHP, Go, Javascript, and RDMBs, however there is work that may require the use of other languages such as Java, C, and R, so experience with these is a plus. The team employs Agile software development methodologies.
Responsibilities
  • Assist senior staff with all aspects of computer systems maintenance and administration.
  • Works together with staff to analyze system logs and identifies potential issues with computer systems.
  • Performs recovery procedures, scheduling, and backups and monitors batch processes.
  • Works together with staff on planning for, and installing, necessary patches, upgrades, and vendor recommended maintenance for servers and their associated storage, network, communications and peripheral sub-systems.
  • Collaborates with Systems Manager to configure systems and their components to maximize the performance and compatibility while minimizing costs, contention, or inference with other systems.
  • Responds to requests from constituents of the department including students, visitors, postdocs, faculty and staff.
  • Maintains complex system and network administration functions. Works with moderate guidance to administer simple systems and assists in the administration of larger systems.
  • Installs, configures and maintains operating system workstations and servers. Performs software installations and upgrades to operating systems and layered software packages. Monitors and tunes the system to achieve optimum performance levels, acquiring higher level skills in the process.
  • Performs other related work as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

Education:
Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field.

Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through 2-5 years of work experience in a related job discipline.

Education:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science.
Experience:
  • Direct work experience with Linux operating systems.
  • Knowledge of basic software development practices and principles (basic programming experience).
  • Ability to perform software installations, configurations and upgrades.
  • Working knowledge of email, instant messaging systems, Google Drive, and/or Microsoft collaboration software.
  • Experience managing networked servers and workstations with knowledge of TCP/IP network services, system utilities, hardware installation, and OS installation.
  • Experience in a multi-platform network environment including mail service and client support, backup and restore technologies, Macintosh and Linux communication software support, and various graphical user interfaces.
  • Direct work experience with operating system.

  • Knowledge of system administration issues in a large and complex client server environment.
  • Understanding of intruder techniques and software exploitation methods.
  • Outstanding deductive and investigative skills to identify and diagnose complex, non-intuitive technical problems.
